NEW YORK: Hugh Jackman

25/10/2011 by Alan Cole in the UK

Wake up and smell the coffee...

Real Steel star launches coffee shop for charity.

Actor Hugh Jackman has opened a coffee shop in New York to raise money for charity.

The coffee shop is part of the Laughing Man philanthropy brand which Jackman co-founded with friends Barry and David Steingard.

The Australian actor - best known for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men movies - is also a long-term supporter of the charity World Vision, an international development agency...

It was during a trip to Ethiopia as an ambassador for World Vision that Jackman was inspired to go on to develop his coffee business - whilst meeting an Ethiopian coffee farmer, Dukale...

The visit in 2009 involved Jackman living and working on a coffee farm and he became aware of the difficulties facing farmers and wanted to help...

The organisers have subsequently described the project's aims as forming global partnerships: supporting ethical entrepreneurs, job creation and charity...

The new store sells tea, coffee and chocolates with profits to charity while Laughing Man also sells accessories and gifts.

Under the slogan All Be Happy! the Laughing Man organisation channels its profits into its positive causes as well as helping sympathetic companies and products to develop...

The latest launch of the Laughing Man Marketplace cafe certainly develops Jackman's more sensitive side in comparison to his adventurer and action hero roles…

Laughing Man describes its wares as "respectfully traded" "carefully grown" and "deliciously brewed" and is donating profits to charitable educational programmes such as Harlem Children's Villages.

The charity brand Laughing Man was launched on October 12 on Jackman's birthday.

The coffee shop launch has also seen the actor taking a central role posing with fans for photos in NYC.

The cafe is a small shop next to Laughing Man's headquarters on Duane Street, Tribeca in New York City...

The owners say as well as being a meeting place they want their store to be a by-word for super drinks and chocolate... and rumours have it if all goes well it may be developed into a chain...

As his star has risen Jackman, currently in cinemas in sci-fi action drama Real Steel, has become an increasingly active campaigner for charity...

As well as World Vision, the entertainer who was born in Sydney, has also offered support for a number of other charity organisations... including the Global Poverty Project and the Worldwide Orphans Foundation...
