The Canal & River Trust been appealing for help to restore Britain’s 200-year-old canal network which took a hammering during a series of extreme weather events in the UK in the last months...

Canal & River Trust operations director, Vince Moran, explained that support was needed to “fund the immediate and longer-term repairs that will be necessary to bring our towpaths and waterways back into use as quickly as possible...”

The waterways experienced extensive damage to embankments, towpath and canal-banks during a spate of extreme winds and rainfall...

Damage from the recent bout of bad weather left hundreds of fallen trees across the canals network in one 24-hour- period alone...

Severe flooding affected the UK including parts of England such as Somerset, Wiltshire and the Home Counties, causing massive damage to canal networks including debris and damage to bridges, the loss of towpath surfaces and walkways etc...

The charity that looks after about 2,000 miles of waterways has been appealing for help to deal with the impact on landscape and infrastructure across the country...

Fortunately donors and volunteers have been forthcoming since the charity’s National Flood Appeal was launched...

Vince Moran, says: “I’d like to thank those who have shown support during this difficult time...” whilst encouraging continued donor and volunteer support to restore the canals and rivers back to their former glory...

The Canal & River Trust charity launched in July 2012 with the mission of inspiring environmental stewardship and conservation for Britain’s historic waterways...

As well as encouraging leisure and community use on the canals the charity also looks after the UK’s third largest collection of listed structures, along with major wildlife sites, museums, archives, industrial and nautical heritage...
