DALAI LAMA: India animal charity launch

29/11/2012 by Alan Cole in the UK

Dalai Lama lends support to fledgling Indian animal welfare charity in Mumbai...

The Dalai Lama has called for compassion for animals, at a launch event for a new animal welfare organisation in India aiming to combat factory farming and other forms of cruelty...

His Holiness the Dalai Lama joined forces with Humane Society International to launch the charity’s new affiliate organisation on the occasion of World Compassion Day...

Humane Society International India announced its official launch at an event in Mumbai featuring His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who gave a talk about the need to protect animals from human mistreatment...

“Animals deserve our compassion... said the Dalai Lama.

“We must know their pain. We should nurture this compassion through education. Showing concern about animal rights is respecting their life.”

The inaugural opening of HSI India also included leading animal advocate Pritish Nandy; Bollywood icon Anil Kapoor; and author Chetan Bhagat.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS); Andrew Rowan, CEO of Humane Society International (HSI), were also in attendance.

However, the main coup for the new charity launch was clearly the presence of His Holiness, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and one of the world’s most instantly recognisable humanitarians...

"There are remarkable people who have embraced the cause of protecting animals, but few with the moral authority and conviction of His Holiness the Dalai Lama... explained Pacelle.

"His presence today provides an emotional and spiritual lift to our efforts to elevate animal welfare campaigns and activities in the subcontinent of India..."

HSI India will have its headquarters in Hyderabad and is focusing on campaigns against factory farming and stopping animal testing for cosmetics; as well as other programmes including a street dog management scheme.

The charity will also have a veterinary training centre in Jaipur...

At the celebrations in Mumbai the fourteenth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso spoke of his respect for animals which traditionally are held in great regard in Tibetan Buddhism, along with all forms of life, even small creatures like insects...

His Holiness the Dalai Lama also expressed the view that respect for the animal kingdom enables a deeper spirituality and regard for human beings too...
