QUEEN’S HONOURS LIST: Charity awards

Kenneth Branagh, Gary Barlow, Jenny Agutter amongst those on Queen's 'charity' honours list

Hundreds honoured by Queen for services to charity, philanthropy and community efforts...



Kenneth Branagh is one of the big names heading the list in the Queen's birthday honours with awards going to those making contributions to society via community, philanthropy and charity work.

But while Kenneth Branagh is knighted for community work and services to drama however the majority of those receiving awards for charity and community work are operating outside the public eye...

A total of 72 per cent of award recipients are honoured for charitable or voluntary work in their local community in this year’s ‘Diamond Jubilee’ Queen’s birthday honours list.

The Queen's Birthday Honours List 2012 published on Saturday includes the re-introduction of the British Empire Medal in Jubilee year, in order to recognise more public service achievements across the UK.

Those honoured for charity, community and philanthropy work include Kenneth Branagh who receives a knighthood for services to drama and the community in Northern Ireland...

Branagh adds his knighthood to a long list of actor knights over the year from Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Michael Caine and others.

Gary Barlow receives the OBE for his major contribution to charity that has included the Prince’s Trust, Care and Children in Need as well as his recent support for The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.

Choirmaster and broadcaster Gareth Malone (OBE) gains his award for services to music. Malone was responsible for the charity album In My Dreams and single Wherever You Are with the Military Wives, supporting the Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) charities…

The actress Jenny Agutter (OBE) is recognised for her service to charity that includes the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

British Empire Medal winners include Audrey Lloyd for community work in Redcar and Cleveland; and Anne Vance for work for the Praxis Care befriending scheme for services to people with mental illness in Northern Ireland.

MBE recipients include Emma Colyer, who launched her own charity, Body and Soul, helping children and families affected by HIV... Also an MBE goes to Anthony Lowe, who set up the innovative charity FareShare.

Other award winners include Rosamund Spearing, founder of horse riding charity, Ebony Horse Club (EHC). Also Ruth Owen, Chief Executive of Whizz-Kidz, helping young wheelchair users and Pauline Ward, Chairman for Purton Helping Hand in Wiltshire...

Knighthoods have been awarded to the philanthropists Charles Dunstone, founder and chairman of Carphone Warehouse Group and musician and broadcaster, Richard Stilgoe, who set up the Alchemy Foundation and is a noted donator to good causes.

Special awards for women include Lucy Neville-Rolfe, for being a role model for women in business. She has led Tesco's community engagement programme.

MPs receiving awards include Malcolm Bruce, Lib Dem MP for Gordon, who is Vice President of the National Deaf Children's Society and Chair of the Deafness All Party Group in Parliament.

Other awards include a knighthood for Dr William Haughey, a businessman who has donated millions to various charities...

A CBE goes to ex professional footballer, Paul Elliott, for his work with English football’s anti-racism drive, including work with the Kick it Out charity. Former England goalkeeper David James also receives an MBE award for his service to football and to charity.

Other sports related awards include an MBE for Kenneth Woolcott, who created Popmobility.

More than 1,064 candidates have been selected at BEM, MBE and OBE level with the vast majority for services to the community or to charity...
